RESEARCH: The effect of learning ancient greek on the mental and
educational development of child IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS.
Teaching classics in primary schools was unknown as an area of educational
research in Greece until now. So the aim of this study was to test the
effect of learning ancient greek on the mental and educational development of
child. Evidence is cited from an educational project in which an
experimental group of primary pupils taking classical greek (n = 85) over 23
lessons, and a control group not taking classical greek (n= 122), were
pretested, posttested, and compared with regard to modern greek verbal skills
and ethics (moral judgement). The program consisted of pupils (11-12 years old)
who had 45 to 50 minutes of ancient greek per week with particular stress on
vocabulary building and reading comprehension through multisensory instruction
and modern teaching methods like conversational techniques in the classroom and
spoken ancient greek. The justification was to introduce students to the
prosody, structure and vocabulary of ancient greek language, including roots and
prefixes used in modern greek vocabulary and to introduce the Greek culture and
its relationship to present day culture. In each case, the " ancient greek”
students showed significant gains over the control group. Researchers found that
the study of ancient greek increased scores for students in all areas, including
Word Knowledge, orthography, Language, grammatical sensitivity, higher order
thinking skills, like analysis, synthesis, metacognition and moral development.
They gain additional benefits, including being helped with motivation and
intellectual curiosity and this was found in two case studies (roughly ages 5
and 10) too. Educational implications of these findings are discussed
